Electrofishing mark-recapture study yields precise juvenile O. mykiss estimates
A pilot study was initiated in 2012 on Omak Creek to calculate a population estimate for O. mykiss in the stream.  Sites were electrofished in a 2-pass mark-recapture effort and all O. mykiss >95mm were PIT tagged.  Recaptured fish were enumerated and used to calculate a site estimate, which was expanded to the distinct geomorphic reach the site was located in.  Reach estimates were summed to produce an estimate for the stream (detailed methods in Appendix E of annual report).

After repeating this study in 2013 and expanding it to several other streams, this study has allowed us to calculate population estimates in streams where no estimate had been obtained before.  We are also able to monitor the PIT tagged fish as they emigrate from the stream and will be able to calculate an emigration estimate after several years of data are collected.
